WHO ARE SHADOW HILLS PRESBYTERIANS?

If you ask Shadow Hills members why they joined, you will hear words like "accepting", "friendly", and "personal".  The congregation reflects the diversity of the community around it, with blue collar workers, craftsmen, small business people, professionals, artists, educators, and more; a spectrum of ages, races, backgrounds and vocations, united by faith and fellowship.  Many find that their closest friendships are with people they met here.

Located in an equestrian area of the Verdugo foothills, Shadow Hills Presbyterian Church was formed in 1950 to fill a need for spiritual growth and children's Christian education.  Our "country" setting contributes both to the sense that SHPC is a special place and the "down home" relationships among our members and friends.

We are a reformed denomination, committed to helping each other along our path of faith.  Our doors are always invitingly open.  All are welcome to come, participate, and find their own way to God through Jesus Christ.

WHAT DO PRESBYTERIANS BELIEVE?

God is the supreme authority throughout the universe.

Our knowledge of God and God's purpose for humanity comes from the Bible,

Our salvation is through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is God's generous gift to us and not the result of our own accomplishments.

It is everyone's job - ministers and lay people alike - to share the good news of the Gospel through their words and deeds.

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER?

Active members of Shadow Hills Presbyterian Church share the common faith that Jesus is the Christ, our Lord and our Savior.  Everyone who affirms that belief is welcome to become a member of our congregation.

Membership is not an elite status;

it's an involvement.

What SHPC membership is not:

Membership is not a "Get Into Heaven Free" card.

When one arrives at the "Pearly Gates," God will not ask your membership status.

Membership does not mean one is more faithful or knowledgeable than another.

Membership does not require a particular financial or leadership commitment.

What SHPC membership is:

Membership is a step taken on one's faith journey to live out one's faith by making or renewing a commitment to Christ Jesus.

Membership is a symbolic step of laying roots in one place and with one family of faith.

Membership is a way to exercise one's commitment to worship, learn, serve, and join in fellowship with our church family.

Attend one of our Seekers Discussions and learn more about the structure, beliefs, mission and ministry of the members of our church family.

CAN I HAVE MY CHILD BAPTIZED?

Infant baptism is a very powerful sign of how reliant all of us are on God's love and grace.  The child is embraced by God's love even before the child develops faith or can possibly earn God's promised grace.

Our members join the parents in pledging their support and encouragement for the ongoing spiritual development of a child.  The child is embraced as a blessing and a responsibility of our church family.  This commitment to the child and parents is the basis for our Presbyterian requirement that at least one parent shall be an active member of the congregation.

Feel free to talk with Pastor Janet about your desire to have your child baptized.

MAY I TAKE COMMUNION IF I'M NOT A MEMBER?

Presbyterians celebrate what is called Open Communion.  All believers are welcome to the table, no matter where one is on the walk and search for God.  It is a time of celebration and remembrance that challenges us to do two things:

Remember the hope has been given to humanity in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Remember that the body of Christ is larger than our own personal relationships, but joins all of God's children together.

WHAT ABOUT WEDDINGS?

We are happy to host weddings for our members, family, and friends.  Weddings at our church are considered worship services and therefore are officiated by our Pastor.  The first step in planning a wedding is to talk with Pastor Janet and call the church office to determine the availability of dates.  A $100.00 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve the date.  For more information, please call the church office and request a wedding planning booklet that describes our wedding fees and policies.

Those who are not affiliated with our congregation and are interested in having a wedding at Shadow Hills Church are encouraged to attend a worship service to see the sanctuary and meet our pastor.

CAN WE HAVE A MEMORIAL SERVICE?

Our pastor is pleased to meet with members, family, and friends to plan a memorial service to celebrate the life of a departed loved one.  Memorial services are a time when we have come together to:

Thank God for the blessing of our loved one in our lives,

Celebrate how our loved one touched our lives,

Support each other in our time of grief,

Invoke the faith that strengthens our lives together.
